Our Approach to PLC Integration

Our PLC Automation Specialists take a CapEx Conscious, OpEx Optimized approach to Programmable Logic Controllers. This lifecycle-driven approach to implementation looks at total value of capital expense for engineering and procurement and operational expense for maintenance and upgrades.  Ever PLC programming software we deliver is built for resilience, maintainability and alignment with your operational goals.

Needs Assessment and Platform Selection

Based on your control philosophy and existing infrastructure, we recommend the ideal PLC architecture and programming strategy. Whether you have one pilot facility or a network of hundreds of assets, we'll engineer the best platform partnership for your unique enterprise needs.

Standards Based Programming

We follow IEC 61131-3 Programming Standards and client-specific conventions to ensure code quality and long term maintainability.

NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) – A comprehensive, risk-based approach to managing cybersecurity for critical infrastructure.

IEC 62443 – International standard specifically developed for securing industrial automation and control systems (IACS).

ISA/IEC 99 –Guidelines for defining zones and conduits and assigning security levels across your architecture.

Onsite Commissioning and Startup

Hands-on field support by engineers and I&C Technicians who know your system inside and out.

Our team will support onsite contractors to ensure electrical, networking, and process installation is done correctly the first time – not just fixed after commissioning has begun. Full loop checks, communication checkouts and construction support

Software Acceptance Testing and Factory Acceptance Testing

A comprehensive Software Acceptance Test (SAT) is completed with all of our logical systems deployed.

Control Cabinets can be Factory Acceptance Tested (FAT) with preloaded logic to ensure logic, hardware, and wiring is loop checked on the factory floor, not in the field. Reduce commissioning time by eliminating control and electrical panel wiring issues with fully integrated testing of all your panels, PLCs, and SCADA.

Lifecycle Support and Maintenance

Post-installation maintenance, troubleshooting, and support for the full lifetime of your PLC assets. On-demand remote support when the unexpected happens. Secure your systems with preventative maintenance security updates. Loop tuning and process optimization – as well as upgrade support.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is PLC Programming and why is it important?

PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming involves writing code that automates machinery and industrial processes. It ensures consistent, efficient, and safe operation across various industrial environments. PLCs are used in all critical infrastructure and require specialized support staff for unique programming software.

What industries do you serve for PLC Programming?

We provide services to all critical industries including but not limited to Oil & Gas, Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Power, Food and Beverage, Chemical, Manufacturing, Mining, Building Automation, Datacenters, and more!

Can Atlas OT upgrade legacy control systems?

Absolutely, that's most of what we do. Taking 30+ year old control systems that are not under active support and converting the hardware to modern control systems. Whether you have a SLC500, S5, Opto22, or other aging infrastructure, we can help.

What platforms and vendors do you support?

We work on all major PLC Platforms, and unheard of ones as well.

  • Rockwell Automation - Allen-Bradley - SLC 500, MicroLogix, CompactLogix, ControlLogix
  • Siemens - S5, S7, ET200,
  • Emerson - ROC800, ControlWave, Floboss, GE PACsystems
  • Schneider Electric - Modicon M340, 580, SCADApack
  • Phoenix Contact - PLCnext
  • IDEC - FC61, FT1A, SX8R
  • Opto 22
  • What is the difference between PLC and DCS Systems?

Typically PLCs are used for high speed discrete robotic type applications. They traditionally have been used for small independent applications as they were designed for control logic only as an upgrade to relay logic. They do not typically have visualization software, historian, or integrated networking. Though, modern PLCs and Edge PLCs are now starting to include more of these features.

Distributed Control Systems known as DCS are environments that blend multiple independent controllers together and typically come with a full platform including HMI, Historian, and special features like Batch Control or Advanced Process Control.

Do you offer PLC Design and Engineering Services?

Yes. Atlas OT recommends getting a system integrator involved as early as possible in your project to help determine platforms, network architecture, and review process control philosophy, support Instrument Specifications and P&IDs, mechanical and electrical scopes. Because System Integrators are the final line to implement any facility, we have great expertise on what goes wrong on a project, and how the process should work overall.

We can provide system design and engineering for electrical and control panels, Cause and Effect reviews, Control Narrative insights, Sequence of Operations validation, and maintenance understanding for your long term lifecycle management.

Do you offer emergency support for control systems?

Absolutely. We can offer local support onsite or remote support for anywhere. In most cases, we can work with you to implement a VPN and secure remote access to remote view your system for alarm history and audit trail. This allows us to advise your onsite personnel. In a pinch, we can also remote into your technicians PC and use video calls to help remotely diagnose and fix issues onsite.

    Can you support PLC Cybersecurity?
Yes. We follow IEC 62443-compliant cybersecurity protocols including role-based access, port restrictions, secure remote access, and network segmentation to protect your control systems.
    Do you fabricate control panels?

We design, procure and acceptance test all control panels and electrical panels. Utilizing our System Integrator pricing model, we often times can turn-key control panels more cost-effectively than a traditional panelshop, plus we include Factory Acceptance Testing with all of our panels. We support projects across North America.
